I remember when I first started looking for the job of my dreams. I applied everywhere not really taking into account the values a company should have in order for me to say yes to the job. I simply wanted my foot in the door somewhere to start the career I’ve been studying so hard for in college for all those years. It wasn’t until the very last 6 months did I really start taking values into consideration. What did I want out of my employer? What kind of environment would I feel the most motivated to achieve goals and work objectives? Do I want an employer that is interested in my career and personal growth or did I want to handle that on my own? I am absolutely so thankful and happy about MEA, because I interviewed here and found they had the original core values I knew I wanted but also values that I didn’t know I NEEDED. Values that I know will help me grow personally and professionally. Each day I am learning to think outside the box, work both collaboratively and independently, be motivated, and most importantly I enjoy what I do!I delight in coming to work everyday knowing that my work is important, that I have flexibility to learn on the job and flexibility for anything outside of work. I enjoy knowing that my managers have my best interest in mind, that although they want to see me progress and be great at this job, I am not expected to be a genius right away. There is no pressure which leaves room to relax and truly absorb all that I am learning. My coworkers are pleasant and easy to work with. Everyone has such a great sense of humor which makes coming to work fun and exciting. I feel safe and part of a team. I don’t know all that I want to know but no one ever makes me feel like a subordinate but instead someone who they are eager to teach and help! Working at MEA so far has been more than I did imagine. When I am here, I want to BE here.
I have loved working at MEA from the first day that I started on July 17, 2006. My first year at MEA had me working six days per week – starting with my first day writing proposals and saving PGW as a member. When I look back at previous jobs and their corresponding work environments, I know that MEA is different and special. There has always been a wonderful family spirit and team support. From day one as the Director of Training, I had fun and loved coming to work. And even when times were extremely difficult and I had personal decisions to make, I thought about what was best for me, as well as what was best for the rest of the team. We had invested many hours and “gray hairs” in MEA and we weren’t going to let any situation ruin what we had. Our team gelled during some very tough times and because of this spirit and commitment to each other, we kept the business running, while keeping the full staff employed.Working at MEA has given me the ability and freedom to maximize all the skills that I have learned throughout my professional and personal life. From dining etiquette to sales skills, I’ve had the opportunity to practice what “I” preach – “above and beyond” customer service levels, supporting others in fulfilling the American dream, and having fun at work. During my first interview at MEA, I told Jim that as soon I wasn’t having fun at MEA, I would leave and find another place to work. And though at times, I was very close to making that move, the team/family, mission, ability to use my skills and become successful kept me here. The mission that is shared by our team, Board Members, vendors and partners are what keeps me pushing forward. The relationships that I’ve made keep me grounded. As I’ve said to many others throughout my past six and a half years, I would have no problem working at MEA until I retire. And since the Board has become more engaged and made great business decisions, I can imagine many more years of success coming our way!!
I love coming to work at MEA every day because I truly believe in what we do - the promotion and support of our members. I admire the entrepreneurial spirit of so many of our small and midsized member companies like DVL and RHJ. I'm happy that we are able provide resources to help them grow and that we are partners in their success. I am excited with every new member who joins because I know that once they get to know us and love us they will spread the word. I am proud of the work we do.I am also proud of the people I work with. Without exception, the employee's of MEA are caring, dedicated, really smart, a little goofy, and simply the best at what they do. They inspire me to be better. I know from my conversations with our members that they appreciate the level of service we provide from the way Carol makes them feel welcome when they arrive for a training to Marian's dynamic presentations. And they certainly enjoy the cookies! It's exciting to see the really creative work that Ben and Susan are doing - it's fresh and current and is a much needed shot in the arm for us and our brand. I think the fact that our retention rate is so high, and the renewal rate for the January group is unprecedented, is an indication that our hard work is paying off. And that's why I love coming to work!
Prior to joining the team, it was important that I “fit,” into the organization. In my experiences, the “fit” of an individual matters when there are strong values that drive an organization. The values that I perceive as important to MEA include the following: (1) teamwork; (2) client focus; (3) joy and humor (4) constant improvement. What makes me excited to come to work every day, is the existence of a challenging work assignment. A challenging work assignment includes, exposure to new ideas, the need to problem solve and interact with a diverse group of people (diverse in background, experiences and ideas). The work environment also drives my excitement barometer. From the moment I walked into MEA it was clear I was in a special place, with people who like what they do every day and who feel valued by what they contribute. People were pleasant and truly they walked around smiling. The facility was clean, organized and appropriate for conducting business. I understood there was a clear sense of urgency in the work that needed to be accomplished; yet no one seemed “flustered” by lack of clarity. It is exciting to think about being part of a values based organization with an awesome team and a clear vision and transparent communication.
I’m paid to do a job I enjoy. I’m pretty much left alone to work. I’m challenged occasionally with new things and would love to learn more if time allowed. I like the staff I work with.
I Got Lucky.
I could be a peon at some huge corporation working alongside 20 other peons who only ever get to see the CEO on the company “About Us
” Page. Instead, I work with people who value me and all that I bring, and believe that in order to get the most out of me, they have to give something of themselves also.I could come in to work every day and toil at some boring, repetitive job. Instead, I’m involved in more than I ever thought I would be. From web and graphic design, to social media, video production, photography, and even marketing strategy, I’m not only involved, I’m given an integral role in bringing it to fruition.I could work in a place with rigid standards and limited expectations. Instead, I’m given the freedom to go create and grow. Yet at the same time I’m given direction for my inexperience, along with the opportunity to work beside and learn from those who know more than I do.I could be trapped in a boring cube within a boring company trying to promote boring products. Instead, I am exposed to a wide range of businesses, industries, needs, and people, and have the opportunity to promote forward-thinking ideas and services that I believe in.Like I said, I got lucky.
Why I love coming to work everyday is to feel appreciated. I enjoy the work relationships I have created over the years. I like that people depend on me. More importantly, people trust me. However, I’ve been told on more than a few occasions that I am an “enabler” – I do too much for people. Even though that may be true, I like that people count on me. Whether, it’s a fellow employee or a member, I truly enjoy giving them my assistance whenever I can. I believe being a team player is a vital role in the workplace.I also enjoy meeting new people at work. I know that going into a strange place, could feel uncomfortable for some. I like to make them feel welcome as their first point of contact. I always think of how I would feel and use that to treat people the same way. Giving them a memorable experience while they are here will help to reassure a return visit. I like not knowing what the day will bring and who I may meet. I hope that I affect someone in a positive way.I feel that every employee, no matter what role, contributes to the success of MEA. I believe in MEA and if everyone is passionate about their job, it will ensure the company to exceed its goals.
It was good reading the Zappo’s Core Value excerpt prior to having to write this since it provided a number of things to think about as it relates to how I feel about MEA. There are a couple of reasons that I love coming to work every day. I’d say the first is because I love problem solving/challenges. Luckily I am faced with challenges day in and day out, brought to me by staff, some of my own, and some facing MEA as a whole. Including the ever present challenge of turning MEA into a viable self-sustaining organization. I am energized when solving problems that help myself/staff/MEA in both the short run and long run. Also as a byproduct of my role I am exposed to almost every single aspect of MEA which allows for a great deal of learning and growth both personally and professionally. This constant learning through working with others or taking on projects on my own is very rewarding.Since that was a small little paragraph I’ll add just a few more thoughts. I really enjoy helping other employees succeed. I have never been a person who has needed nor wanted the recognition or spotlight. But being a person that helps someone achieve their own goals is very gratifying. And although my reputation throughout the office is that of a number crunching penny pincher I’m fairly certain that each employee knows that if they needed help that I’d be there to help at a moment’s notice with no expectation of recognition or reciprocity. And being part of MEA allows me to be a part of something bigger – a company whose primary purpose is to help our members become successful or keep them that way if they already are.
There are many reasons why I enjoy coming to work every day. I get great satisfaction in sharing my knowledge and experience with our members and seeing that it makes a difference in their business results. I feel valued and appreciated for the work that I do; which continues to motivate me to want to do more.Since I became part of MEA (almost 1 year ago), I have greatly enjoyed all of my assignments including interim HR, training, hotline, and various projects (handbooks, job descriptions, etc). I enjoy the diversity of being able to do lots of different things – it makes for the work to be interesting and challenging. In addition, I very much appreciate the flexibility that this role provides. As a professional (and mother of 4 children), I have been seeking a role such as this for a long time. It is great to work for a company that provides such opportunity and “GETS IT” when it comes to balancing work/family. I also enjoy everyone that I work with at MEA. My colleagues have all been WONDERFUL! Since I have been here, everyone has been welcoming, supportive, team-oriented, and FUN to work with. MEA is a great place and I am proud to be a part of it!
I like coming to work because we all work together as an excellent team. Every one comes to work to work and yes we do have fun. But we are here to do a job but it does not feel like a job we are all striving for the same goal to give our members and clients the wow treatment from the MEA staff. We also are striving to help our member and clients expand an grow their business with the training skills and the knowledge that we are providing to our members and clients. So the reason I enjoy coming to work is that I enjoy helping people and enjoy being with the people I work with because they also feel the same way when it comes to our members and clients.
The best part of coming in to work every day is the sense of being able to help our members and their employees with whatever they need. There is great value in the authentic, trusting relationships that have been built – with members, trusted business partners, and MEA employees. Respect for each employee’s gifts, personality and talents is part of our culture and helping each other succeed for the greater good of MEA is a natural theme. Having a strong member service focus allows me to do what I do best – help organizations and their employees navigate the changing health system.MEA is an information hub. The ability to stay on top of pertinent business issues and legislation, as well as learn about multiple industries, is an opportunity for growth that is not present in the non-consulting world. By its very nature, MEA is a place where employees can learn and stretch themselves in many areas of expertise. Employees are encouraged to absorb as much information as possible and are given opportunities to take on projects outside their normal area of responsibility.
I love coming in to an environment where everyone is excited about their jobs. Every person I work with at Mea seems to be committed to give our members 100%. I like the challenging projects that continue to help me grow and learn and step out of my comfort zone. For my situation right now, I also like the flexible schedule and the ability to come and go as I please as long as the job I need to do, gets done.I enjoy hearing that the clients/members want more work based on the job that I have done. I also feel like I am making a difference to our members and helping their employees grow and develop based on our limited time together in training. Internally I enjoy being a part of a smaller company where I feel like I am at the beginning stages of a boom. Having a CEO with a vision, who is committed to letting everyone shine and explore their strengths, is exciting as well.
I like my job at MEA because it is challenging and requires me to research answers. I answer questions from members, and some of the questions are about routine matters and I have to think about how to explain something that is a fairly basic practice. Other questions are out of the ordinary, and require some research to explain to the member their legal responsibilities. Our members are one of the reason I like coming to work. They are usually very appreciative of the information we give them. Sometimes, they like to argue about it because it isn’t what they want to hear. Even that can be fun. And often, they are just unaware of their legal obligations.
I love coming to work at MEA because there are always such positive attitudes and relationships between everyone at MEA as well as with our Members and partners. It definitely feels like everyone is pulling in the same direction and that each person truly loves to help our Members do business better. This is also exemplified by our Board of Directors, as well as the former Board Members I have met, who have such a great passion and commitment to MEA.I believe that you can work hard, have fun and be a little goofy. I am also a believer in giving employees responsibly to think and act on their own without a high level of oversight and guidance on the day to day as long as they check in when they are not sure. Kind of like an Honor Code of behavior which has always been very important to me. Everyone at MEA behaves this way every day which makes my job easier and has allowed us to make changes and grow in a very short time.
Coming to work for me looks different than for most other MEA employees. Instead of getting in my car and driving to the office, I climb the steps to the second floor and walk into my home office. It’s great to have the flexibility to work whenever my clients need me – either 8:00 AM or 8:00 PM. It’s also great to be able to work in my sweats! I love the work that I do – I love the mental challenge of compensation, and I particularly love the opportunity to offer the same quality services to our small and middle-market members that they would expect to receive if they were a large corporation. The challenge of uncovering and solving business problems for our members is exciting to me, so no matter where I work, I enjoy that. However, there are days when I DO get in my car and drive into the office up in King of Prussia, and I like that too. I love to maintain face to face relationships with my coworkers and my clients. MEA is an extremely relational organization, and there is nothing better than sitting down and getting to know the people I work with – co-workers and members – a little better every time we meet. MEA’s success is fueled by the quality of our relationships and by our willingness to go the extra mile and provide incredible service to all of our members, and coming into the office allows me to do that.
We are a group of caring, supportive, compassionate, hardworking people who like to play and have fun. We strive for excellence in all that we do. Slackers never make it. We work like owners; we’re flexible; we’re resourceful in that we have always done a lot with very little. We figure things out, we adapt to change sometimes kicking and screaming, but when we do we move forward never looking back. We are creative in our approach; and” no” or “I can’t” is never an answer. Naysayers and complainers beware! It’s about a “can do” attitude at MEA. No laziness allowed, we find a way to always get it done even if on vacation or getting up at 5:00 a.m. to meet a deadline. We are committed to MEA and our members – customer care is #1 from the inside out. Growing up in a family business where the customer was king, and the employees made the business, I find that MEA resonates with my personal values. AND, now with you here we can fly! We were just missing your strong leadership.
One of the main reasons I enjoy coming to work everyday is that I can bring my “complete self” to work. The fact that I can infuse my humor into the work environment helps me and other MEA employees (I hope) blow off steam and release stress. It also helps me (and co-workers) to stay keep a positive attitude and gives me the energy to focus on wowing our customers. I’m more focused on our internal customers these days, but that’s just as important as our external customers as they are the ones wowing our external customers. One of the ways I like to generate more positive energy is by looking for opportunities to praise people for a job well done.Another reason I love coming to work everyday is that I believe in supporting local companies in being more successful. In can be frustrating to watch the news and see what’s wrong in the world and feel helpless to change it. At work, I feel we are making strides everyday to help our local community by supporting its employers. An example of this was when the recession hit, being small and agile organization, we were able to quickly create an outplacement workshop that lead to our work with CareerLink where we are helping dislocated workers by giving them hope and the tools they need to do an effective job search. I believe by supporting local employers we are doing our part to make the world a better place.
As for why I like coming to work, I have always enjoyed the staff I have worked with over the years at MEA. With only one or two exceptions, everyone has been a gem to work with and have been extremely knowledgeable in their field.I personally like the ability to work with different companies where you never know what the issues might entail. I like being able to come in to MEA or the member, do what needs to be done and then get out. (I don’t mean that in any derogatory manner. I am just at the point in my career where I no longer wish to have a lot of responsibility, so this suits me well). I find it rewarding to know that members value the expertise and advice that I offer.
