“I’m it—I’m the whole human resources department.”

Lisa Lafredo is the HR Director for Berger Rental Communities, a property management company based in Wayne, Pennsylvania that specializes in multi-family apartment communities in six counties throughout Southeastern and Central Pennsylvania. 

Like many small business employees, Lisa is both management and staff in her department.  She says, “As the sole HR person in the company, I do everything—soup to nuts.  I’ve worked with other benefits consultants and most of them just sent in the benefits package, and then my employees came barreling in with questions. There was no support from the broker.  But MEA operates differently.”

Berger had been using a broker for its benefits consulting.  Says Lisa, “They were more reactive than proactive—I was always having to reach out to them and ask them questions, instead of the broker working to understand our needs.”  Berger’s President heard of MEA at a professional workshop and, says Lisa, when she saw what MEA offered in regards to Benefit Services and other services such as the workshops, roundtables and legal hotline, Berger became a MEA member. “MEA understands us.  They really look out for the best interests of our company, throughout the year.” 

Lisa appreciates the comprehensive support that MEA delivers.  “I don’t have to do anything at the Open Enrollment meetings but the introduction—MEA does the rest, and that’s heaven.  Having that resource, that reassurance is huge when you’re trying to do everything yourself.”
